WOODSTIC: a 100% wood-based, bio-sourced and thermoplastic material - Carnot Icéel

WOODSTIC explores a new frontier: transforming wood into a thermoplastic material without fossil-based polymers. An innovative, sustainable and patented alternative!
The WOODSTICK project, led by LERMAB and supported by Carnot Icéel, tackles a major challenge: designing a 100% wood-based thermoplastic material, without any fossil-derived polymers. The goal? To create wood powders that can be hot-formed using standard plastics processing technologies.
To achieve this, researchers modified the wood’s chemical structure via copolymerization, following green chemistry principles. The developed process is low-cost, solvent-free, and enables the creation of a fully bio-sourced thermoplastic material with unprecedented properties.
This innovation was made possible thanks to strong collaboration between a PhD student funded by Région Grand Est and Université de Lorraine, LERMAB’s academic researchers, engineers from the Plastinnov platform, and financial support from Carnot Icéel and Labex ARBRE.
Key results:
• A patent filed in 2022 (FR2205776 WOODSTIC)
• A peer-reviewed article accepted in RSC Advances
• A maturation request submitted to SATT Sayens
WOODSTICK stands as a credible alternative to fossil-based plastics and paves the way for future industrial partnerships in sustainable plastic manufacturing.
